TOWSON, Md. (April 24,
2011) -
Playing in overtime for the second consecutive contest, the William
and Mary lacrosse team fell at Towson, 12-11, on Sunday afternoon.
The back-and-fourth contest featured 10 ties and multiple
lead changes before Towson's (10-6, 6-1) Rhiannon Coogle scored the game-winner
with 0:39 remaining in overtime.
The loss snapped W&M's (9-6, 4-2) three-game winning
streak and means Towson will host the Colonial Athletic Association tournament
in two weeks.
Senior Grace Golden
led the Tribe with four goals (on five
shots), while she also broke the program's single-season caused turnovers record
- increasing her total to 43 with four against the Tigers on Sunday. Classmate
Sarah Jonson
established the previous mark of 42 last season.
Sophomore Kyrstin Mackrides
also came up big for the College
with three goals, while Jonson totaled five draw controls, two caused turnovers
and two ground balls. Senior Molly Wannen
also aided the effort and finished
with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls.
It was a defensive battle early, as neither team scored
during the opening 10 minutes. W&M got on the board first, however, when freshman
Jenna Dougherty
found the back of the cage on a free-position opportunity with
18:21 showing.
Although Towson responded with a pair of goals midway
through the half to take a 2-1 edge, Mackrides scored on an 8-meter shot to
even the count at 2-2 with 10:16 remaining in the first half.
After the teams traded goals - Ashley Waldron scoring for TU
at 8:17 and junior Stephanie Steinweg
for W&M at 6:48 - Towson rattled off
a pair of goals to take a 5-3 advantage with 2:22 left on the clock. However, the
Tribe answered shortly thereafter when Mackrides tallied her second goal of the
afternoon, this one coming off an assist from senior Ashley Holofcener
, to
narrow the margin to just one at the intermission.
The back-and-fourth contest continued in the second half, as
W&M tied the score on the opening possession when Golden tallied a free
position goal at 29:38.
While Towson retook a narrow one-goal edge two minutes
later, the College answered with scores by Golden and freshman Taelor Salmon
at
25:05 and 24:20, respectively, to give W&M a 7-6 lead.
The Tigers knotted the score at 7-7 with a goal by Coogle at
20:36, but W&M reclaimed the lead when Golden tallied her third goal of the
second half with 18:37 remaining.
Back-to-back goals by Towson gave the Tigers a 9-8 lead with
12:25 showing on the clock, but a score by Mackrides off an assist by Dougherty
two minutes later tied the game for the eighth time.
The teams traded goals two more times in the final 10
minutes of regulation before heading into overtime. Jess Dunn gave the Tigers a
10-9 edge at 7:45 before senior Maggie Anderson
scored off an assist from
Salmon at 6:03 and Golden tallied a free position goal at 2:13 to put the Tribe
ahead. However, Kelly Custer's goal with 0:49 remaining tied the game at 11-11.
Waldron put a shot on goal with 0:11 remaining, but senior goalkeeper Emily Geary
made a huge save for the College to send the game into the extra frame.
Wannen won the draw to start the initial portion of
overtime, but the Tribe was unable to capitalize as Towson goalkeeper Mary
Teeters saved a shot by Mackrides as the first three-minute segment ended.
After Towson won the second draw of the overtime session, Coogle scored the
game-winner with 0:39 remaining. Although W&M won the ensuing draw, it
turned the ball over before taking a shot.
The Tribe will close out the regular season when it plays at
Old Dominion on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
