NEWARK, Del. (April
22, 2011) -
The William and Mary lacrosse team rallied back from a
four-goal second half deficit and freshman Taelor Salmon
scored the game-winner
with 1:55 remaining in the third overtime period as the Tribe earned a
thrilling 11-10 win at Delaware on Friday evening.
The victory gives W&M (9-5, 4-1) its fifth win in the
last six games and secures the program's fourth-consecutive Colonial Athletic
Association tournament berth.
After trailing 8-4 with less than 20 minutes remaining in
regulation, the College utilized a 6-0 run during an 11-minute stretch to pull
ahead by two with 7:24 showing. A goal by Delaware's (7-9, 2-4) Bridget Burns with
0:28 left on the clock sent the game into overtime, and neither team registered
a shot during the initial extra session.
Salmon had an attempt on goal with 1:23 remaining in the
second overtime period, but UD goalkeeper Makenzie Worthington made the stop. On
the ensuing possession, UD's Quinn Daly had a scoring opportunity but her shot
hit the post as time expired. Wannen then won the draw to start the third extra
session, and Salmon put away the game-winner 1:05 later.
Senior Ashley Holofcener
led a group of eight Tribe players
who tallied goals, as the Baltimore, Md., native recorded a game-high four
points on two goals and two assists. Senior Grace Golden
also totaled a pair of
goals with five draw controls, four caused turnovers and two ground balls,
while senior Molly Wannen
added two goals, three draw controls, two ground
balls and a caused turnover.
After equaling W&M's career caused turnovers record last
weekend, senior Sarah Jonson
took sole possession of the record with three more
caused turnovers against the Blue Hens to increase her total to 132.
Delaware opened the game with a pair of goals, but the Tribe
got on the board when sophomore Caitlin Murphy
scored off an assist from classmate
Kyrstin Mackrides
with 23:02 showing.
Although UD briefly retook a two-goal lead on a score by
Quinn Daly just 20 seconds later, W&M responded with a goals by junior
Jenny Michael
and Wannen to knot the count at 3-3 with 19:26 remaining in the
half.
It was a defensive battle during the remainder of the
initial stanza, however, as the teams combined for just two goals and were
tied, 4-4, at the break. Golden provided the Tribe's score when she found the
back of the cage with 15:15 on the clock.
W&M outshot the Blue Hens, 11-5, in the opening 30
minutes, but UD's Worthington registered six saves.
Although Delaware began the second half with four unanswered
goals to build an 8-4 advantage with 19:15 remaining, the Tribe charged back
with the 6-0 run. Five different players scored for W&M during the pivotal
stretch, as Mackrides, Golden, Anderson and Wannen each found the back of the
cage once, while Holofcener added two goals and an assist. Wannen provided the
tying score with 10:47 left, while Holofcener registered the go-ahead goal with
8:09 remaining.
Delaware ended its drought when Kalyn McDonough scored with
5:27 remaining, while Burns tied the contest with just 0:28 left in regulation.
Jonson won the ensuing draw, but W&M was unable to get a shot off as the
teams headed into overtime.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Towson on
Sunday at 1 p.m.
