- The William and Mary Tribe baseball team fell to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks
on Saturday afternoon, 11-2. With the
loss, the Tribe's record drops to 18-19 overall and to 9-8 in the CAA. UNC Wilmington's record improves to 20-14 on
the year and to 9-5 in conference play.
Junior Tadd Bower
had a pair of hits and a RBI to lead the Tribe
on Saturday afternoon, while sophomore Ryan Williams
also had two hits and
scored a run for the College. Also tallying
hits on the day for William and Mary were senior Derrick Osteen
, sophomore Ryan
Brown, and freshman Ryan Lindemuth
, who also had a RBI.
In the first three innings, the Tribe was able to get its
leadoff runner on in each of those frames, but was unable to get a run on the
scoreboard. The Seahawks took advantage,
scoring two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
With the Tribe unable to get any offense of its own,
Wilmington added to its lead, scoring one in the fourth and three runs in both
the fifth and sixth to take a 9-0 advantage over the College. For the Tribe, the College was able to get
its leadoff batters on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but in each frame
the Green and Gold hit in to a double play to end any threat.
After the Seahawks scored two more in the bottom of the eighth,
the College pushed across two runs of its own in the top of the ninth. With one out and a runner on first, Williams
singled through the left side of the infield to put runners on first and
second. Bower was up next and singled to
left-center field, scoring Slattery from second who reached on a walk. Lindemuth followed and fouled out to right,
but the ball was hit well enough to plate a tagging Williams from third.
The College would be unable to get any more runs on the
board and dropped the game to UNC Wilmington, 11-2.
The William and Mary Tribe baseball team will conclude its
series with the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Sunday, April 17. First pitch at Brooks Field is scheduled for
2 p.m.
