WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
(April 15, 2011) -
Playing in the newly opened Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field for the first time, the 18th-ranked William and Mary lacrosse
team earned a 13-8 victory against Hofstra on Friday evening in Williamsburg.
After building a 6-1 advantage by halftime, the Tribe (7-5,
2-1) extended its lead to as many as 10 in the final 30 minutes en route to
claiming the victory.
The College utilized a balanced attack, as seven different
players scored - a total that included five players who posted double-digit
efforts. Senior Grace Golden
led the way with four points (3g, 1a) to go with
five caused turnovers, four ground balls and a pair of draw controls, while
sophomore Kyrstin Mackrides
also registered four points (2g, 2a). A trio of
seniors - Maggie Anderson
, Ashley Holofcener
and Molly Wannen
- also tallied
two goals apiece, while Wannen added three draw controls to move into a tie for
second on W&M's career list (115).
Senior goalkeeper Emily Geary
was outstanding in front of
the cage and allowed just three goals with seven saves in her 51 minutes of
action.
Senior Sarah Jonson
and redshirt freshman Katie Stillwell
also came up big defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground balls
apiece, while Jonson also added three draw controls. With the effort, Jonson
increased her career caused turnovers total to 127 and needs just three more to
break the school record established by Kristen Wong (2004-07).
"Overall, I was pleased with the total team effort tonight,"
head coach Christine Halfpenny
said following the win. "We focused on winning
the 50/50 balls in practice this week and we executed that phase of the game
tonight, as we held an edge in draws and dominated the ground balls. We also
had balanced scoring tonight, and that was a product of good, efficient ball
movement by a number of players.
"The victory was another important step towards earning a
spot in the CAA tournament. We look forward to getting back out on the field
and continuing to improve as we get ready for another important conference game
against Drexel on Sunday."
W&M held Hofstra (4-8, 0-3) scoreless for the opening
16:34 of the contest, as it opened up a 3-0 lead. Mackrides provided the
initial goal at 23:28 on a free position opportunity, while Wannen followed up
that score by winning the ensuing draw and racing down the field to tally the
second goal of the contest just nine seconds later. Anderson capped off the game-opening
3-0 spurt just a little more than a minute later off an assist from Mackrides.
Hofstra posted its only goal of the first half when Alex
Mezzanotte found the back of the cage with 13:26 showing, while scores by
Golden, Mackrides and Anderson helped W&M take a 6-1 advantage into the
locker room. Geary totaled five of her saves in the opening 30 minutes.
While the Pride registered the initial score of the second
half less than a minute into play, the Tribe broke the game open with a 7-1 run
that spanned much of the second half en route to building a comfortable 13-3
advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining. Five different players scored
for W&M during the stretch, while Golden and Holofcener found the back of
the cage twice.
Although Hofstra tallied the final five goals of the contest
down the stretch, the outcome was never in doubt as W&M earned the victory.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Drexel for
Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the contest, W&M will honor its
seven-member senior class, which will be competing in their final
regular-season home game.
