WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 12, 2011) -
Having
posted an outstanding effort during the first half of the 2011 season, William
and Mary senior attacker Maggie Anderson
was recently added to the Tewaaraton
Award Watch List. Anderson joins W&M seniors Grace Golden
and Sarah Jonson
who
garnered the honor during the preseason.
The annual list is comprised of the nation's
top collegiate lacrosse players and is carefully screened and identified by a
selection committee of college coaches. The watch list will eventually be whittled
down until the top 10 finalists are named in May.
One of the Colonial Athletic Association's
top players this season, Anderson currently ranks seventh in the league with
2.3 goals per game and 10th with 2.6 points per game. Additionally, the
Richmond, Va., native has garnered the conference's player of the week award
twice while also being selected to the Synapse Sports National Honor Roll once.
Anderson's best performance of the season
came in the victory against Navy when she nearly equaled a single-game school
record with seven goals, while also totaling an assist and two caused
turnovers. Another memorable performance came in the season opener at Duke when
she registered six goals.
The Tewaaraton Award was formally
established in August of 2000 by The University Club of Washington, D.C., and
is the pre-eminent lacrosse award, which is awarded annually to the NCAA male
and female lacrosse players of the year. Tradition dictates that each year the
Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois
Confederacy: the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and the Tuscarora.
The 11th
annual Tewaaraton Award event is set to recognize the Year
of the Tuscarora.
The 11th
annual Tewaaraton Award
will be presented on June 2, 2011 at the historical Warner Theatre in
Washington, D.C. Event details and ticket information can be found at www.TewaaratonAward.org
