WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The William & Mary lacrosse team earned an impressive conference road victory on Saturday afternoon, as it defeated Monmouth, 13-10.
The win was W&M's fourth triumph in its last five games and marked the fifth consecutive contest in which it limited its opponent to no more than 10 goals.
Although W&M (7-4, 2-1) fell behind 3-0 early and trailed at halftime, 6-5, it scored six of the first seven goals following the intermission to build an 11-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
Monmouth (7-5, 0-3) briefly narrowed the margin to two at 11-9 with 10:16 remaining, but the Tribe responded with a back-to-back goals from
Nora Begley and
Kate Draddy to secure the triumph.
Begley led W&M with a game-high five points (3g, 2a), while
Taylor McCall (3g),
Finley Hoffman (2g, 1a) and Draddy (2g) also came up big offensively. Additionally, Draddy equaled season highs in draw controls (7) and ground balls (5) to go with two caused turnovers.
Anna Armstrong (2 CT, 3 GB) and
Sophie Busam (2 CT, 2 GB) came up big defensively with multiple caused turnovers, while goalie
Anna Lopez posted eight saves and three ground balls.
W&M outshot MU, 35-25, which included an 18-14 advantage in attempts on goal.
The Tribe also owned a 22-17 margin in ground balls, while both teams recorded 12 draw controls.
W&M committed eight fewer turnovers than the Hawks (9-17).
Grace Curtin led Monmouth with four goals and three draw controls, while Olivia Castaldo also scored twice.
W&M will continue its conference slate when it plays at Elon next Saturday at noon.
