WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
(March 5, 2011) - Three Tribe players recorded hat tricks as the No. 19
William and Mary lacrosse team earned a 15-11 victory against Boston University
on Albert-Daly Field at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Grace Golden and freshman Taelor Salmon both totaled
four goals apiece, while senior Maggie Anderson posted four points on three
goals and an assist. Golden also registered three draw controls, three caused
turnovers and a ground ball as she moved into second place on W&M's career
draw controls list with 110.
Junior Jenny Michael and redshirt freshman Katie Stillwell
were both key on draws with five and four, respectively, and helped the Tribe
(2-1) earn a decisive 19-9 advantage as a team. Senior Sarah Jonson also
registered three draw controls to go with four ground balls and five caused
turnovers, as she moved into second on the program's all time caused turnovers
list with 101. The five caused turnovers were just one shy of W&M's
single-game school record.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Geary also helped key the victory, allowing a season-low 11 goals with seven saves.
"I'm excited that each week we continue to get better," Head Coach Christine Halfpenny said following the win. "We have worked hard in practice focusing on different parts of the game, and it has paid off each week.
"I was pleased with our balanced offense today, as we had seven different scorers. Jenny Michael, Katie Stillwell and Sarah Jonson were all outstanding on the draw and crucial to the victory. We were also very strong defensively down the stretch - both individually and collectively - and we really limited their opportunities in the final five minutes. BU is a very well-coached and talented team, and I'm happy we were able to earn the win."
The contest was close early, as the College and the Terriers
were tied 2-2 after the opening five minutes of action. Stillwell and Salmon
both scored on free position opportunities to provide W&M's goals.
The Tribe began to pull away midway through the initial half
with a 6-2 run that helped the squad build an 8-4 advantage. Anderson and
Golden both came up big during the stretch with three and two goals,
respectively, while Salmon punctuated the run with an unassisted score at the
13:58 mark.
Although BU narrowed the margin to 8-6 shortly thereafter,
sophomore Kyrstin Mackrides and Salmon both found the back of the cage in the
stanza's closing minutes to give the Tribe four-goal cushion at the break.
W&M owned a 12-5 advantage in draws during the opening
30 minutes, while Anderson and Salmon led the squad with three goals apiece.
While Boston was the first to get on the scoreboard in the
second half, the Tribe responded with a pivotal 4-0 run to extend the lead to
14-7 with 22:00 remaining. Golden tallied a pair of the scores, while Salmon
and Michael both registered goals on 8-meter shots.
Four unanswered goals by the Terriers narrowed the margin to
14-11 with 5:34 left on the clock, but a fast-break score by junior Stephanie Steinweg off a pass from Anderson with just over two minutes remaining sealed
W&M's victory.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Oregon next
Friday at 5 p.m. (PST).
