WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
(March 23, 2011) -
Nine different Tribe players scored as the 16th-ranked
William and Mary lacrosse team earned its most lopsided victory of the season
with a 21-8 win against Virginia Tech on Albert-Daly Field at Martin Family
Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the triumph, W&M (4-3) improves to 3-0
at home this season.
Seniors Sarah Jonson
and Grace Golden
, both Tewaaraton Award
Watch List selections, posted outstanding performances in the victory. Jonson
set a single-game school record with nine caused turnovers to go with five draw
controls, four ground balls and a goal, while Golden registered a game-high
five goals (on six shots) with six draw controls, three caused turnovers and
two ground balls. The Manhasset, N.Y., native's draw control total ranks second
on W&M's single-game list and is just one shy of the record set by Colleen
Dalon in 2004.
Senior Ashley Holofcener
also recorded an impressive effort
with four goals, while sophomore Kyrstin Mackrides
tallied four points on three
goals and an assist. Senior Maggie Anderson
, sophomore Caitlin Murphy
and
freshman Taelor Salmon
all registered a pair of goals apiece.
Senior Emily Geary
also helped key the victory, as she
totaled nine saves and equaled a season best by allowing just eight goals.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our performance today,"
Head Coach Christine Halfpenny
said following the win. "Although we were a
little shaky in the first few minutes, we fought through it and quickly got
back to our game plan. We used a lot of different players today, and there was
no drop off going to our bench - it really helped us utilize our speed.
"Today wasn't a perfect performance and we still have some
things to work on, but this win will help us gain confidence and momentum as we
move forward."
Although Virginia Tech (6-4) jumped out to an early 3-2
advantage in the opening six minutes, the Tribe rattled off seven unanswered
goals during an 11-minute span to build a comfortable 9-3 lead. Golden provided
three of the seven goals, while Holofcener scored twice. Mackrides and Murphy
also found the back of the cage during the game-changing stretch.
The Hokies ended a scoreless drought of 18:13 on a goal by
Ryan Rotanz with 7:53 showing, but W&M closed the half on a 3-1 run to lead
12-5 at the intermission.
Golden and Holofcener already had four and three goals,
respectively, at halftime, while Jonson provided six caused turnovers and three
ground balls in the opening 30 minutes.
Although Tech got on the scoreboard first in the second
stanza with a goal by Dylan Garner at 21:24, the College outscored the Hokies
9-2 the rest of the way. W&M utilized a balanced attack to close out the
victory, as nine different players scored the final nine goals.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Penn State on
Sunday at 1 p.m.
