CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
(March 16, 2011) -
The 16th-ranked William and Mary lacrosse team led No. 8
Virginia by seven goals in the second half, but the Cavaliers rallied back for
a 14-13 win on Wednesday night in Charlottesville. The loss snapped W&M's
three-game winning streak.
A pair of W&M career records were broken during the
contest, as senior midfielder Grace Golden
became the program's all-time leader
in draw controls (116) and senior goalkeeper Emily Geary
eclipsed the school
record for career saves (538). Additionally, Golden moved into a tie for second
on the program's career points list (189) with a five-point effort (4g, 1a) to
go with her game-high five draw controls.
In addition to Golden, four other Tribe players posted
multi-goal efforts, as senior Ashley Holofcener
(2g, 1a), senior Maggie
Anderson (2g), junior Stephanie Steinweg
(2g, 1a) and sophomore Kyrstin
Mackrides (2g, 2a) all registered a pair of goals apiece.
Defensively, senior Sarah Jonson
tallied three ground balls,
two caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls, while junior Sarah Mulvey
had
two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Senior Kaitlyn Gambrell
tallied a
team-high four ground balls with a caused turnover.
"I'm proud of the way we started the game and how we stuck
to the game plan in the first half," Head Coach Christine Halfpenny
said. "We
worked together really well, which was evident by the number of assists we had.
"While the effort was there, unfortunately it was a tale of
two halves. Although we made some adjustments, their ability to win the draws really
hurt us in the second half. We will learn from this game, and we're excited
about getting back on the field for our next challenge."
The Tribe (3-2) jumped out to a 3-1 advantage
early in the contest on goals by Holofcener, Golden and Mackrides.
Although Virginia (4-3) cut the margin
to just one on a pair of occasions and trailed 4-3 midway through the half,
W&M began to pull away with four unanswered goals. Golden ignited the run
with a score at 14:34, while a goal by Holofcener off an assist from Mackrides
pushed the margin to 6-3 moments later. Following a UVA timeout, the College
tacked on two more goals - coming from Steinweg and Golden - to extend the lead
to 8-3 with 8:34 showing.
A goal by Virginia's Josie Owen at the
4:56 mark ended the run, but the Tribe responded with a 3-0 spurt to take a
seven-goal advantage, 11-4, with less than a minute remaining in the opening
half. Mackrides, Anderson and Steinweg all tallied goals during the stretch.
While Virginia scored on a deflected
pass with 13 seconds on the clock, W&M still owned an 11-5 lead at the
break.
W&M controlled the time of
possession for much of the opening 30 minutes and held a commanding 11-6
advantage in draw controls at the intermission.
Although the Tribe scored first in the
second frame on a goal by junior Jenny Michael
with 25:23 showing, Virginia
answered with a 4-0 run during a span of 3:05 to narrow the margin to three,
12-9.
Golden's fourth goal of the day with
19:57 remaining ended the run, but the Cavaliers added five unanswered goals to
take a 14-13 lead.
Following UVA's go-ahead goal with 2:46
remaining, W&M had a chance to even the score on a free position opportunity.
However, Virginia goalkeeper Kim Kolarik saved Steinweg's shot with 2:04
showing, and the Cavaliers were able to run out the clock.
The Tribe will return to action when it
squares off against second-ranked Northwestern at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington,
Texas on Saturday at 7 p.m. (CST). The contest versus NU will mark the
first-ever women's lacrosse game hosted by the world's most prominent sports
venue.
