The William and Mary Tribe baseball team fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs on
Saturday afternoon, 12-5, at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. With the loss, the Tribe falls to 5-12 on the
season overall and to 1-4 in CAA play.
ODU improves to 8-8 on the year and to 1-1 in conference play.
Offensively, the Tribe was led by senior Derrick Osteen
, who
got on base each time he came to the plate.
Osteen went 3-for-3 on the day with a RBI, two walks, and a run scored. Freshman Devin White
had a RBI single for the
Tribe, while sophomore Kevin Nutter
and freshman Ryan Lindemuth
also drove in
runs for the Green and Gold.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Old Dominion took
control of the contest by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third
inning. ODU would collect five hits in
the frame, including two home runs to take the 7-0 lead. In the next two innings, the Monarchs played
add-on, tacking on a run in both the fourth and fifth to take a 9-0 lead after
five full.
In the top of the eighth inning, the College would bat
around and put five runs on the board. With
one out, the bases were loaded for Lindemuth after walks to both Osteen and
senior Jonathan Slattery
and a single from junior Tadd Bower
. Lindemuth had a very nice at-bat, drawing a
four-pitch walk to drive in the College's first run of the game. Next up was the pinch-hitter White, who
delivered a RBI single into left-center field, plating another Tribe run.
With the bases still loaded, Nutter took one for the team,
taking a breaking ball to his shoulder.
Nutter's RBI hit-by-pitch made the score 12-3 in favor of the
Monarchs. After a fielding error on ODU
scored another run for the College, Osteen would again get on base, slapping a
RBI infield single to the shortstop.
Osteen's third single of the day made the score 12-5 in favor of Old
Dominion.
The Tribe would not be able to stage a ninth inning rally
against the Monarchs and would lose to Old Dominion, 12-5
