EUGENE, Ore. (March 11, 2011) -
The 18th-ranked William and Mary
lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three games with a 12-8 victory at
Oregon on Friday evening. With the win, W&M improves to 3-1 while Oregon
falls to 3-3.
Although the contest was knotted
at 5-5 with 22 minutes remaining, the Tribe held the Ducks scoreless for a
stretch of more than 15 minutes and scored six unanswered goals en route to
earning the win.
The Tribe utilized a balanced
attack, as six different players scored and three posted hat tricks. Senior
midfielder Grace Golden
earned her fourth-consecutive hat trick to open the
season, while also totaling six ground balls, four caused turnovers and a draw
control. With the effort, the Manhasset, N.Y., native moved into third place on
the program's career points list with 184. Sophomore attacker Kyrstin Mackrides
totaled a team-high four points on three goals and an assist to go with a pair
of caused turnovers, while senior midfielder Molly Wannen
also tallied three
goals.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Emily Geary
allowed a season-low eight goals while recording nine saves. With
the impressive performance, she increased her career saves total to 533 and
needs just four more to break the school record of 536 established by Sarah
Witkowski (1992-95). Senior defender Sarah Jonson
also had a tremendous game
and registered three caused turnovers, three ground balls and three draw
controls.
While Oregon jumped out to a 3-1
advantage to open the game, W&M responded with three unanswered scores beginning
midway through the opening half. Golden's goal with 15:17 showing got things
started, while Wannen tallied her second score of the game on a free position
opportunity. Mackrides finished off the stretch with a goal off an assist by
senior attacker Ashley Holofcener
with 4:39 remaining to give the Tribe a 4-3
edge. However, a score by Oregon's Jess Drummond with less than minute
remaining evened the count, 4-4, at halftime.
After trading goals during the
opening seven minutes of the second stanza, the College rattled off a 6-0 run
during a stretch of more than 15 minutes to build a comfortable 11-5 lead.
Wannen ignited the run with a free position goal, while Golden scored twice
during the pivotal stretch. Mackrides, junior Jenny Michael
and Holofcener also
provided goals during the run.
Although UO outscored W&M 3-1
down the stretch, the Ducks were unable to get closer than the final margin the
rest of the way.
The Tribe will return to action
when it plays at seventh-ranked Virginia next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
