WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team ended the regular season in dramatic
fashion Saturday night, beating the Northeastern Huskies, 3-2, in
overtime. With the victory, the College
earned the No. 3 seed in next week's Virginia 529 CAA Men' Soccer Championship,
while Northeastern will be the No. 5 seed.
Heading in to the conference championship, the Tribe's record stands at
10-8 with a CAA mark of 7-4.
Freshman Chris Albiston scored the game winner in the 99th
minute, while classmate Josh West also tallied his first collegiate goal in the
victory. Sophomore Roshan Patel also
netted a score, while senior Nicolas Abrigo, sophomore Ben Coffey, and freshman
Michael Teiman all had assists on the night.
Early in the first half, both teams had to adjust to the
playing surface and the field. Once both
teams got familiar, the offense came at a fast and furious pace even though it
wasn't leading to any scores. Finally in
the 43rd minute, the Tribe got on the board.
On a throw in deep in Northeastern territory, Teiman fired a
pass in to the middle of the field, deflecting off a NU defender. Before the ball even hit the ground, Patel
cracked a shot on goal, rocketing past the Northeastern goalie from 25 yards
out to the far post. Patel's first goal
of the season was a beauty and gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead headed to the halftime
break.
Northeastern came out of the half determined to tie the
match, wasting little time evening the match at 1-1. In the 47 minute, NU's Mike Kennedy scored
off a cross, beating the W&M keeper to the near post for the goal. Just two minutes after half, the Tribe found
themselves tied with Northeastern, 1-1.
Just under 20 minutes later, the Tribe was on the attack in
the Huskies' end of the pitch. Coffey
fired a shot on goal from the right side toward the near post. The NU goalie was unable to control the save
and the rebound went right to the foot of West, who tapped the ball in from
three yards out for his first collegiate goal.
Less than 30 seconds later, however, the Tribe's lead would
be gone. After getting the ball after
the W&M score, Northeastern's Don Anding took a pass on the right side and
shot from 15 yards out, beating the Tribe goalie to the near post, tying the
match at 2-2.
Despite some nice chances late, the Tribe was unable to get
a third goal in regulation and the match headed to overtime. Overtime is nothing new to these two teams,
as including Saturday's game, all eight matches between the William and Mary
and Northeastern have gone in to at least one overtime period.
In overtime, the Tribe was able to control the bulk of
possession and found the match winner in the 99th minute. After a Northeastern turnover near midfield,
Abrigo dribbled down the left side of the field. Abrigo played a through ball to a darting
Albiston down the middle of the field, who beat his defender. With the NU goalie charging at him, Albiston
was able to shoot the ball past him for the match winner and his first
collegiate score. Albiston's golden goal
gave the Tribe a 3-2 win over the Huskies at the Warhill Sports Complex.
For the match, the Tribe out shot the Huskies, 17-13, with the
College getting nine shots on goal to just two for Northeastern. Corner kicks were 6-2 in favor of the Green
and Gold.
With the victory, the William and Mary Tribe men's soccer
team will be the No. 3 seed in next week's CAA Tournament. The College
will face the No. 6-seeded Georgia State Panthers on Thursday, November
10. Kickoff in Harrisonburg, Virginia is
scheduled for 5 p.m. For complete tournament
