The William and Mary field hockey team was dealt a heart-breaking loss at Drexel on Friday night, falling 2-1 on the road in conference play. The Tribe is now 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Dragons improved to 9-4, 3-1 in the CAA.
After falling behind early, the College battled back and tied the score at 1-1 at the beginning of the 33rd minute. Sophomore Chaney Manganello (Richmond, Va.) found junior Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.) in the circle, and she blasted her team-leading fifth goal of the season to even the ledger. Zamesnik's five goals ties her career-best total in just the 11th game of the year, after needing 18 to reach the same total in 2009.
The Tribe was outshot 8-6 in the first half, but came out firing in the second half and outshot Drexel 11-4 after the break. However, the Dragons were able to regain the lead in the 50th minute when W&M was whistled for challenging a breakaway attack and Drexelw as awarded a penalty stroke. The home team would convert, and hang on for the win over the final 20 minutes. W&M had a penalty opportunity of its own in the 56th minute, but the attempt slid just wide of the goal.
William and Mary is back in action Sunday, with a 12 p.m. match at Towson.
