WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary field hockey team scored first and scored last, but was unable to overcome a tough Vermont side Friday night at Busch Field, falling 4-2. The Tribe now stands at 2-5 on the year, while the Catamounts improve to 4-3.
Box Score
William and Mary got on the board first in the match, as senior
Rebecca Wagner (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her second goal of the season in traffic from three yards out. For a while, at least, the Tribe looked like it would hold the Catamounts scoreless, but a fast-break scoring chance in the 20th minute found the back of the box to knot the score at one each. The visitors went up 2-1 a few minutes later, and then added two more in the first 20 minutes of the second half to push the margin to 4-1.
the Tribe offense kept battling, however, generating 11 total chances in the second half and seven corner opportunities, which finally paid off with just over one minute left. Wagner was again the impetus of the play, inserting the ball to classmate
Erica Eng (Morristown, N.J.), who steadied the ball for sophomore
Maria Caro (Martinsville, N.J.). Caro ripped off a rocket from the top of the circle that banged into the back of the goal, for her second goal of the year. Already in just six matches, the sophomore has matched her goal total from one year ago. It was the second assist of the year for Wagner and third for Eng, who now ranks eighth on the Tribe's single-season assist chart with 0.43 per contest in 2010.
The W&M offense outworked Vermont all night long, totalling 18 shots (nine on goal) to the Catamounts seven (six on goal). The Tribe also held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-4.
Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.) made a pair of saves on the night before giving way to
Elizabeth Frey (Virginia Beach, Va.), who was not tested over the final 12:24.
William and Mary hits the road for the first time in five matches on Sunday, travelling to Chapel Hill to take on the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at 1 p.m.
