While Oregon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play, the College responded with five unanswered goals to build a 5-2 advantage with 11:38 remaining in the first half. Four different W&M players scored during the stretch ? freshman
Kyrstin Mackrides, Wannen, Zulty and Steinweg. Zulty was particularly impressive during the run, though, as she tallied two goals and a pair of assists.
Although Oregon cut the margin to one with goals by Alex Breiner and Jana Drummond, Steinweg's second score of the first half gave the Tribe a 6-4 lead at the break.
The Ducks narrowed the margin to one just nine seconds into the second half when Drummond won the opening draw, raced down the field and found the back of the net. However, the Tribe countered with a pivotal 8-1 run during the next 15 minutes to open up a 14-6 lead.
Michael and Golden ignited the run with goals coming just 15 seconds apart at 26:42 and 26:27, respectively. A score by Drummond at 26:03 briefly cut the gap to 8-6 before W&M rattled off six consecutive goals. The College utilized a balanced attack during the run, as five different players found the back of the cage ? Wannen, Zulty, Holofcener, Golden and Rees. Reese finished off the run with consecutive goals, the second of which came on a free position opportunity with 15:05 remaining.
Oregon charged back with six unanswered goals, the final five of which came between 7:57 ? 2:46, to draw within just two, 14-12. However, a score by Michael off an assist from Holofcener with 2:12 showing ended the run, and Oregon would score only once more in the final two minutes as W&M held on for the win.
The Tribe will return to action when it plays at No. 10 Boston University next Sunday at 1 p.m.
