No. 4/5 Tribe Takes Down No. 8 New Hampshire, 13-3

DURHAM, N.H. - The No. 4/5 William and Mary football team snapped No. 8 New Hampshire's school-record 12-game home winning streak with a 13-3 victory at Cowell Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.H.

The Tribe (7-2, 5-1) posted one of its best efforts of the season defensively, as it held UNH (5-4, 3-3) to just 275 total yards. W&M was especially effective against the run and allowed just 39 yards (on 31 carries) on the ground.

Junior defensive end Marcus Hyde registered eight tackles with three sacks and four tackles for a loss, while senior linebacker Evan Francks totaled a game-high 10 stops. Senior linebacker Wes Steinman and freshman defensive tackle George Beerhalter both recorded sacks, while junior safety Jake O'Connor came up with a key interception that prevented a UNH score late in the first half.

Although the Tribe totaled just 171 yards of total offense, Payton Award candidate running back Jonathan Grimes rushed for a game-high 111 yards with a touchdown. Eighty-seven of Grimes' yards, as well as his touchdown, came in the second half.

While neither team was able to score during the opening quarter, UNH took a 3-0 lead when Mike MacArthur kicked a 40-yard field goal with 14:57 showing in the second quarter.

W&M answered two possessions later when redshirt freshman quarterback Brent Caprio connected with senior wide receiver Chase Hill on a 19-yard touchdown pass in the left side of the end zone midway through the second quarter. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful. Caprio, who was making his first collegiate start, completed all three of his pass attempts on the seven-play, 51-yard drive.

After taking possession at its own 37-yard line with 1:02 remaining in the half, UNH quickly drove to the Tribe's 21- and appeared in position to score. However, O'Connor intercepted a pass by quarterback R.J. Toman in the end zone to halt the drive.

Although the Tribe held a 6-3 lead at halftime, UNH outgained W&M, 120-64, in the opening 30 minutes.

After Caprio was forced out of the game due to injury midway through the third quarter, the Tribe offense began to utilize its rushing attack. Grimes was a significant contributor in that effort down the stretch, and his 1-yard touchdown run with 0:56 remaining in the third quarter gave W&M at 13-3 lead. The short three-play, 35-yard drive was set up when Jabrel Mines recovered a fumble on punt coverage, marking the second consecutive week in which he has recorded a fumble recovery on special teams coverage. Grimes keyed the entire drive, as all three plays were runs by the Palmyra, N.J., native.

UNH had a pair of scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter, but neither yielded any points. Beerhalter came up with a huge stop on a fourth-and-1 at W&M's 23 midway through the quarter, while MacArthur missed a 41-yard field goal with 2:49 remaining.

The Tribe will return to action next Saturday when it plays at No. 22/23 James Madison.
