Davin Dzidzienyo arrived at William & Mary as a 17-year-old with big dreams and a determination to make an impact. During his time in Williamsburg, he has done just that – becoming one of the nation's top defensive lineman, a two-time team captain, and a respected leader on and off the field. His journey has been defined by resilience, faith, and a deep commitment to his teammates and community.
Now pursuing his master's in marketing after earning a bachelor's degree in sociology, Davin continues to embody the values that have guided him since day one: hard work, selflessness, and a relentless drive to get better. Whether he's making big plays in front of cheering Tribe fans at Zable Stadium, leading summer workouts, or reading to elementary school students, his story is one of perseverance and purpose.
Bouncing Back Stronger
When a knee injury threatened to derail his season last fall, Davin faced a choice: stay frustrated or find a way forward. Initially disappointed, he leaned on his faith and decided to approach rehab with a positive mindset. He remembered overcoming a similar injury before and used that experience to build confidence, telling himself that if he had done it once, he could do it again.
During that challenging period, his support system played a crucial role. His mother, Nicole Lamar, and his girlfriend, Liya, were by his side every step of the way, offering encouragement whether he was at his lowest or highest. Their unwavering support helped him stay focused on his recovery and return to the field even stronger.
Leading with Purpose
Being elected a team captain twice is an honor Davin doesn't take lightly. For him, leadership is about building genuine relationships with every teammate so that when he speaks, they know it comes from a place of love and a desire to help the team succeed. He believes in having those tough, uncomfortable conversations when necessary and setting a standard that others can follow.
Togetherness is the message he and the leadership group are emphasizing this season. Inspired by Head Coach
Mike London's mantra of faith, family, and football, Davin describes this year's team as the most tight-knit group he's been part of at W&M. It feels like a true brotherhood, and he takes pride in being part of a family that lifts each other up and holds one another accountable.
Giving Back to the Community
Service has always been important to Davin. He feels a deep responsibility to give back to the greater Williamsburg community that has supported him throughout his college years. Highlighting those meaningful experiences was participating in Read Across America, where he visited elementary schools to read to young students. Seeing how the kids looked up to him made him realize the positive impact he could have simply by showing up and being present.
For Davin, giving back isn't just something he does—it's part of who he is. He was raised to help others and believes that no matter how tough things might seem, there's always someone who would be grateful to be in your position. That perspective continues to shape the way he approaches both football and life.
Growing On and Off the Field
William & Mary has helped Davin discover who he is and given him the confidence to thrive in any environment. He's learned to connect with people from all walks of life, whether they're fellow student-athletes or classmates excelling in other fields. The sense of community on campus has made him feel at home, whether he's in the classroom, talking with professors, or spending time around athletics.
His development as a player has been shaped by the role models who came before him, including Nate Lynn, Carl Fowler, and Zyquan Bessant. They showed him what it means to be selfless and to help others without expecting anything in return. Combined with defensive line coach
Keenan Carter's ability to develop players and the support of the strength and conditioning staff, Davin's buy-in to the program has helped him become the player he is today.
Embracing New Challenges
As William & Mary transitions into its first season in the Patriot League this fall, Davin is excited for the opportunity to test himself and the defense against new opponents and styles of play. He knows the Patriot League emphasizes the run game and looks forward to the physical challenge it presents. His focus remains the same: communicate well, play fast, and play hard-nosed football.
On the field, he enjoys the versatility of moving around the defensive line and creating matchup problems for opposing offenses. Whether he's playing inside or on the edge, he appreciates the opportunity to make plays in different ways and help the team wherever he's needed. For Davin, it doesn't matter where he lines up—he's ready to do his job and contribute.
A Bright Future
With a bachelor's degree in sociology already in hand and a master's in marketing underway, Davin is exploring a range of career options for life after football – whether that's after this season or following a professional career in the NFL. He's interested in marketing and finds the field of consulting particularly appealing, whether that's in finance, athletics, or another area. His coursework is giving him a taste of everything, and he's enjoying the process of exploring the path he wants to take.
Earning a world-class degree from a prestigious university like W&M means a great deal to him. He understands the effort, time, and dedication it takes to graduate from such a respected institution and values the connections and opportunities that come with it. When asked how he wants to be remembered, his answer is simple: he wants people to say he was a great football player—and, just as importantly, a great person.
