WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary field hockey team claimed a wet and wild victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at Busch Field, scoring with 34 seconds remaining in regulation for the 1-0 win. With the win, the Tribe improves to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Blue Hens fall to 4-7, 0-4 in the CAA.
Box Score
The winning play came in down the right sideline, and the ball found the end of freshman
Taylor Gladey's (Mountaintop, Pa.) stick two yards out, just outside the near post. Gladey dumped the ball into a scrum of eight players (Delaware and W&M both) in front, and Kyle was able to deflect the cross up and into the top corner of the net at the far post for her second game-winner of the year, and third goal overall. The assist marked the first point of Gladey's career.
The Tribe's defense had an outstanding performance to put the team in position to win late, holding the Blue Hens to just eight shots on goal. Sophomore
Elizabeth Frey (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued her terrific weekend by stonewalling the visitors on all eight attempts, and earned both her first victory and her first shutout.
The College's attack was relentless on the afternoon, peppering the Delaware zone with 20 shots, 10 of which were on-frame. Senior
Kelsey Nawalinski (Downingtown, Pa.) tied her career high with four shots, three on-goal, and five players all had two shots. Both of freshman
Taylor Hodge's (Louisville, Ky.) shots were on-target, coming on a single possession at the end of the 17th minute.
William and Mary returns to action next weekend, traveling to face Hofstra on Friday, October 8th, at 3 p.m., and stopping by Drexel on Sunday for a 12 p.m. match.
