WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary volleyball team fell at home Saturday night to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0. The Tribe now stands at 7-8 on the year, 1-2 in the CAA, while the Rams improved to 4-15, 2-1 in the league.

Ginny Bray (Cary, N.C.) led the team on the night with a match-high 12 kills, and added a solo block as well. Classmate
Cassie Crumal (Castle Rock, Colo.) had 24 assists, and sophomore libero
Delaney Gordon (Walnut Creek, Calif.) had 15 digs. Also of note was sophomore
Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.), who hit .400 with five kills and a pair of blocks. Senior
Erin Skipper (Yorktown, Va.) matched O'Connell with two blocks (one solo, one assisted), and added eight kills and eight digs.
In the first set, after VCU jumped in front 6-2, Skipper led the Tribe on a 4-0 run to tie the set with a pair of kills and a service ace. The Rams responded with five in a row of their own, but a kill by O'Connell ignited an 8-1 run for the home team. Bray did much of the heavy lifting on the streak, with three kills and a solo block. Another VCU run put the Tribe behind, but W&M chipped away and pulled back within one, at 21-22 on another kill from Bray. VCU was able to score the final three points, however, and take the set 25-21.
In the second set, the College jumped out early, and led 8-3 on a kill by freshman
Alexandra Ciaccio (Houston, Texas). The Rams chipped away,a nd took over the lead, but W&M would work its way back as well. A kill by
Gina Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and consecutive service aces by
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) cut the VCU lead to two, at 19-21, but again, the Rams were able to pick up four of the final five points to go up 2-0 for the match. VCU took control of the third set early with an eight-point jag to lead 8-4. The Tribe began chipping away, and cut the lead to a single point at 15-16. The Rams were able to string together another 9-1 run, however, and were able to pull away to a 25-17 win and take the match.
William and Mary heads out on the road next weekend, traveling to Towson for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, October 9. The second match of the weekend will be at Delaware, Saturday night at 6 p.m.
