NORFOLK, VA - The William and Mary field hockey team brought its season to a close Sunday afternoon, giving Old Dominion all it could handle before falling 5-3 in Norfolk. The Tribe finishes the season at 6-12, 2-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while ODU completes its season at 9-11, 5-3 CAA.

Erica Eng (Morristown, N.J.) had her second multi-goal game of the season, scoring twice in the second half to try and lead her team to the comeback win. For the season, she scored five goals and two assists for 12 points, a career-best in all categories. Senior captain
Wesley Drew (Virginia Beach, Va.) also finished her season with 12 points, scoring a goal and an assist to finish the year with four of each, and improve to a tie for fourth in school history with 18 career assists. She is the first Tribe player since
Jordan Steele '04 to have three consecutive seasons of four or more assists. Sophomore
Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.) earned her fifth assist of the year, on Drew's goal, and led the team in goals (5), assists, and points (15) in 2009.
Old Dominion opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a penalty stroke conversion, and raced out to a 3-0 lead with additional scores in the 19th and 24th minutes. William and Mary got on the board one minute later when Zamesnik sent a savvy pass across the circle to Drew off of a penalty corner, and the captain was able to score from seven yards out.
Neither team was able to make a score again before intermission, before the Monarchs stretched their lead to three in the 40th minute with a rebounded shot and goal off a penalty corner. Eng made the most of her own rebound situation in the 45th minute, when
Mikala Savaides (Burke, Va.) had a shot blocked and Eng was there to collect the carom and score.
Eng was again on the spot in the 56th minute, after ODU scored its final goal to go up 5-2. After inserting the ball on a penalty corner, the junior made a nuisance of herself in front of the goal and was in position to tip in a shot from Drew and cut the lead to two. Drew had one more attempt for the Tribe, in the 67th minute, but ODU's keeper was able to make the save to preserve the win.
William and Mary's three goals against the Monarchs are the most scored by the Tribe since beating ODU 3-2 in the AIAW Region II championship game in 1980, and the most given up by Old Dominion in a win since 2006 (4-3 over No. 5 Duke). Captain
Carrie Thompson (Fredericksburg, Va.) made nine saves in goal, raising her career total to 179 and ranking ninth in school history.
