WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The William and Mary football squad will end spring practice drills tomorrow with the annual Green and Gold game. The intrasquad scrimmage is open to the public and begins at 1 p.m. at Zable Stadium. Heading into the finale of spring practice, Tribe head coach
Jimmye Laycock spoke with TribeAthletics.com about the progression of the team thus far.
1. Heading into the final practice of the spring, could you comment on the performance of all-conference quarterback Lang Campbell?
A: Lang's done a very good job. We've cut his reps down a little bit to look at the other quarterbacks a little more, since Lang took almost all of the snaps last fall. But he's progressing very well.
2. One of the top battles has been at the wide receiver position. Can you talk about the play of rising seniors Dominique Thompson and Josh Lustig at the position?
A: Dominique's had a very good spring.
John Pitts was doing well, but he's out with a foot injury. Dominique and Josh each have a great deal of experience. They both understand our offense very well, so that should help them out. They're practicing very consistently and doing a good job. We're also pleased with some of the younger guys who have come in and are giving us a spark at different times.
3. How has tailback Jon Smith performed in the spring?
A: I think Jon's done a good job this spring. He's experienced and understands the offense. He always puts in a good effort.
4. How have Adam O'Connor and Jonas Watson progressed?
A: Both of our defensive ends are doing a good job adjusting to a new scheme. Jonas has been more consistent this spring, and I think that's part of the maturing process. Adam has continued to give great effort and work to improve.
5. Can you discuss the play of the cornerbacks so far?
A: So far it's been fine. Right now
Alan Wheeling and
Richard Riley are in there, along with
David Page and
Cedric Slye. They're picking up a new scheme and some new coverages, with some new techniques that we're teaching now. I think, by and large, that they've had a good spring. They must improve their consistency, but that will come.
6. How has the consistency level of the specialists been thus far?
A: I think they've been okay.
Mike Mesi and
Greg Kuehn have done well. When we've worked them, they've been pretty good.
