Daniel McCain joined the Tribe women's tennis staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 2020. A former standout student-athlete at the University of Michigan, McCain joins the Green and Gold with extensive experience at the junior, collegiate and professional levels.

McCain currently serves as the Director of Racquet Sports at the Kingsmill Resort. He is also a Tester/Clinician for the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) and is a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) Ambassador. He was worked in his capacity with the PTR since 2014 and with UTR since 2018.

Prior to Kingsmill, McCain was the Director of Tennis at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club in Virginia Beach from 2011-19. During his time, he was named the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Virginia Teaching Pro of the Year in 2012, the PTR Mid-Atlantic Teaching Pro of the Year in 2013 and the 2014 PTR Member of the Year for the state of Virginia.

Along with his work at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club, McCain served as a Team USA Coach between 2015-19, working with the top nationally ranked juniors (14 & Under) at USTA Regional Training Centers. He also was a coach for USTA Mid-Atlantic Zonals Teams. In 2015, he served as a USTA National Team Coach for the top nationally ranked juniors at USTA National Championships.

Prior to his time at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht club, he was the manager of player development with the USTA from 2010-11.

Along with his experience in the junior ranks and at clubs, McCain has significant collegiate coaching experience, including serving as the head coach at Cal State Bakersfield from 2007-10. With the Roadrunners, McCain led program to the first Division I wins in school history despite having only two scholarships.

From 2003-05, McCain served as the assistant women’s tennis coach at Illinois State, helping the Redbirds to back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. In total, he coached five All-MVC players, including Liina Suurvarick who was named both the ISU Female Athlete of the Year and the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Most recently, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Norfolk State in 2019.

Following his time at Illinois State, McCain spent two years as the co-Director of Tennis at the Higueras-Gorin Tennis Academy. He coached and developed ATP and WTA Tour professional players and worked with top national and ITF world ranked juniors.

McCain’s list of certifications includes PTR Professional, PTR Tester/Clinician, USPTA Elite Professional, USTA High Performance Coach, USTA Sports Science Level 1 and ATP Certified Coach (Global Professional Tennis Coaches Association - GPTCA).

Along with his experience on the court, McCain is a published author. He published a trio of Amazon Bestsellers in Building a Champion, Momentum and How the Tennis Gods Move. McCain’s books also include The I Formation and Functional Training for Tennis. He had articles published as well in Tennis Life Magazine, PTR Tennis Pro Magazine, Tennis View Magazine and Elite Tennis (GPTCA publication) as well as on Tennis One, TennisPlayer.net, USTA Player Development Website and MomentumTennis.com.

As a player, McCain was state high school championships in both Florida and Illinois. He won the golden ball as the winner of the Boy’s 18’s USTA Indoor Championship title. He was a silver ball winner as a finalist at the Boy’s 18’s National Clay Courts. McCain also claimed both the Florida Open and Copper Bowl titles during his junior career. He was a full-ride scholarship player at the University of Michigan where he earned All-Big Ten honors in both singles and doubles as well as garnering Academic All-Big Ten distinction. He was ranked as high as No. 36 in the ITA National Rankings.
McCain graduated from Michigan in 2002 with concentrations in journalism and psychology. He earned his post-graduate degree from Illinois State in 2005 in graphic design.
