Biography

Co-Captain Adam Avant has earned first team Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete honors from the College Gymnastics Association as well as three Provost Awards which are granted to William and Mary athletes who maintain over a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. After having scored in the 97th percentile on the MCATs, Adam is well on his way to joining the ranks of the Tribe’s many gymnasts (30 since 1975) who have gone on to medical school. He has started the admissions process and has already received an interview at the University of Colorado’s Medical School.

Since 1975, the Rock Award has been awarded to the hardest working gymnast who has overcome significant obstacles to his success or to the gymnast that can always be counted on when the going gets tough. Traditionally, the Rock is passed from Rock to Rock (or to a Rock and a Pebble if the Rock will be graduating) at the end of each season. Adam was presented the Pebble Award for the incredible amount of patience and dedication he has shown in recovering from various injuries and his very successful return to competition.

Last season, Adam finished sixth in team points scored while leading the team to a second consecutive National Academic Team Title. The Tribe gymnasts now have collected more national academic team championships (seven) than any other university including a remarkable sting of three titles in the past four years. This year Adam will have a significant presence on our floor exercise, vaulting, parallel bars, and high bar squads. He also has a profound impact on his teammates both in and out of the gym, as his passion for gymnastics and learning is inspiring as well as contagious. He is a kinesiology and health sciences major and was coached by Ron Brant at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Adam is the son of Dan and Claire Avant.
