RICHMOND, Va. — William & Mary volleyball secured its first sweep of the season in a 3-0 win over defending Southern Conference regular season champion ETSU on Saturday at the VCU Invitational, taking the sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21.
The Tribe hit .292 while holding the Buccaneers to a .091 hitting percentage and 23 attack errors.
After trailing 14-12 in the first set, W&M used a Buccaneers service error, an
Emily McKee kill and a block by McKee and
Olivia Westfort to take a 15-14 lead before pushing ahead 17-15.
When the Buccaneers cut it to 18-17, the Tribe answered with four straight kills from McKee,
Katherine Arnason,
Audrey Brcka and
Teagan Pocius. Arnason added another late kill, and a Westfort block finished the opening set at 25-20.
In the second set, the Green and Gold moved in front 10-9 on a Pocius kill, then created separation from an 11-10 edge by winning seven of the next eight rallies to build an 18-11 lead. That stretch included kills from Pocius, Arnason, McKee and
Cate Hatfield.
The Buccaneers got back to 22-19, but W&M closed the set with a Buccaneers service error and two Pocius kills for a 25-19 win.
W&M broke open the third set from 20-16, scoring four straight points on Brcka's serve, including three service aces, to reach set point at 24-16. Earlier, Arnason served back-to-back aces during a response that erased a 7-3 deficit, and Brcka added a kill and an ace as the Tribe moved ahead 10-8.
The Buccaneers answered with five straight points, but Westfort finished the set with a kill from Hatfield for a 25-21 W&M win.
