DURHAM, N.C. – The William & Mary football team fell to the defending ACC Champions, Duke, 62-7 at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Running back
Jack Reuter scored the Tribe's touchdown with a 6-yard catch on a short pass from quarterback Winston Waktins late in the first quarter. The reception was Reuter's first career touchdown.
Freshman wide receiver
Khylil Johnson helped set up the touchdown with a 63-yard catch on the previous play, as the Pittsburgh, Pa., native finished with three receptions for 92 yards.
Defensively, linebacker
Christopher Higgins totaled a career-high 12 tackles with a TFL, while linebackers
Harrison Johnson and
Kyle Reviello posted seven stops apiece.
The Tribe (2-3) had two additional scoring opportunities in the first half, but it had a 53-yard field goal attempt blocked and turned the ball over on downs at Duke's 5-yard line when a fourth-and-1 conversion came up just short.
Watkins completed 8-of-14 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown during the first half, while most of Johnson's production (two catches for 91 yards) also came during the opening 30 minutes.
Duke (4-0) was led by Nate Sheppard, the nation's leading rusher, with 116 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, while quarterbacks Walker Eget (2 TDs) and Dan Mahan (3 TDs) combined to throw five touchdown passes.
