WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer fell to Towson, 2-0, in its CAA home opener Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Towson scored once in each half, with Sophie Thibeault opening the scoring in the 12th minute before Kale'a Perry converted a penalty kick in the 78th. The Tigers improved to 4-4-2 overall and 1-1 in CAA play, while the Tribe moved to 1-5-3 and 0-1-1 in league action.
W&M generated six of its nine shots after halftime and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks for the match. Towson finished with a 12-9 edge in shots and put five attempts on goal compared to two for the Tribe. Mia Tegeris played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
First Half
Freshman Ava Magnuson generated W&M's first opportunity just 45 seconds into the match, sending an attempt wide of the left post.
Towson applied pressure early, hitting the right post in the sixth minute before Tegeris made a save on Paelyn Bayer less than three minutes later.
The Tigers broke through at the 11:05 mark. Thibeault scored off assists from Bayer and Sydney Lindeman to give Towson a 1-0 advantage.
Lindsay Wilson registered an attempt in the 19th minute before Magnuson put W&M's first shot on goal in the 32nd. Towson goalkeeper Teagan Gardner made the save to maintain the one-goal advantage entering halftime.
Towson held a 9-3 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes, while each side generated one corner kick.
Second Half
William & Mary came out on the front foot after halftime, generating four shots and three corner kicks over the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
Molly Widderich recorded an attempt in the 52nd minute before Ellie Leffler added a shot in the 60th. Moments later, Ava Marvin put an attempt on frame, forcing Gardner into her second save of the night. Widderich followed with another opportunity as the Tribe continued to apply pressure.
Tegeris made saves on Meron Koro and Perry to keep the deficit at one before Magnuson and Wilson each generated opportunities for W&M.
Towson doubled its advantage at 77:42 when Perry converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.
W&M finished the second half with a 6-3 advantage in shots and generated five of its six corner kicks after the break. Magnuson led the Tribe with three shots, including one on goal, while Wilson and Widderich recorded two attempts apiece.
