WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary lost to Stony Brook 3-2 (27-25, 20-25, 19-25, 26-24, 9-15) in a thrilling match on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe (4-7, 0-2 CAA) overcame a late 24-22 deficit to take the first set 27-25, winning five of the final six points.
Emily McKee's kill tied the set at 24,
Teagan Pocius' block put W&M in front, and after the Seawolves (8-4, 2-0) tied it, Pocius and
Olivia Westfort finished consecutive kills on
Cate Hatfield assists.
Earlier, Hatfield served the Green and Gold from 2-1 to 6-1 during a stretch that included two
Katherine Arnason kills.
W&M opened the second set with a 5-1 lead, including a block by Pocius and McKee. The Seawolves later tied it at 10-10 and moved in front 17-12, leaving the Tribe chasing the set despite late kills from
Sophia Van Name. The Seawolves closed out the set 25-20.
In set three, the Green and Gold stayed close early behind kills from
Ava Crabtree and Westfort, but the Seawolves used three straight Ayanna Pierre Louis service aces to move ahead 9-6.
W&M got back within 13-12 on a Pocius kill and two Seawolves errors, but the Seawolves answered with three points to go up 16-12.
Audrey Brcka added two late kills for the Tribe, but the Seawolves closed out the set 25-19.
W&M answered a late 24-23 deficit by taking the final three points to win the fourth set 26-24. Westfort tied it with a kill, Brcka followed with a kill for set point, and a Seawolves bad set finished it.
The Tribe pulled within 11-9 in the fifth set on consecutive kills by Westfort and Brcka, both from Hatfield. The Seawolves answered with the final four points to win it 15-9.
