CHARLESTON, S.C. — William & Mary women's soccer freshman Ava Magnuson scored the first goal of her collegiate career as the Tribe opened CAA play with a 1-1 draw against College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Senior Ava Schultz recorded the first assist of her collegiate career on Magnuson's goal, which came just 1:06 into the match and gave W&M an early advantage. Charleston's Bella Antonio equalized in the 38th minute, and neither side found the deciding goal after halftime.
The Tribe moved to 1-4-3 overall and 0-0-1 in CAA play, while Charleston moved to 3-4-3 and 0-0-1 in league action.
W&M outshot the Cougars, 13-11, and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Green and Gold also generated 11 corner kicks, including nine in the second half, while limiting Charleston to four. Mia Tegeris played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
First Half
William & Mary wasted little time finding the opening goal.
After Mia Abbey recorded the first shot of the match just 42 seconds in, Schultz set up Magnuson for the freshman's first collegiate goal at the 1:06 mark to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
W&M continued to generate opportunities as Abbey put shots on goal in the third and 21st minutes. Brooke Oswald added another attempt on frame in the 33rd minute, but Charleston goalkeeper Ainsley Chunn kept the Tribe from extending its advantage.
Charleston pulled even at 37:55 when Antonio scored off assists from Maggie Wadsworth and Lyla Schick, sending the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
The sides finished the opening 45 minutes even with six shots apiece, while Charleston held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Second Half
William & Mary applied pressure throughout the second half, generating seven shots and nine corner kicks while holding Charleston to five attempts and one corner.
The Tribe earned four corner kicks over the opening eight minutes of the half before Magnuson nearly added her second goal in the 60th minute, forcing Chunn into a save.
Charleston threatened in the 72nd minute when Kassy Uzelman's attempt hit the crossbar. Tegeris later denied Sienna Ward in the 75th minute to keep the match level.
Oswald put a pair of shots on goal over the final 18 minutes, while Schultz nearly found the winner in the 87th minute. Her attempt was turned away by Chunn, who finished with seven saves.
Abbey led the Tribe with five shots, including two on goal, while Oswald finished with four attempts and three on frame. Magnuson recorded three shots, putting two on goal, including her first collegiate tally.
