WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer scored three times in the second half to earn its first victory of the season, defeating Radford, 4-1, Sunday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Sophomore Alex Garrison scored twice for his first two goals of the season, while freshmen Brown Huffard and Aidan Gatchell each recorded their first collegiate goals. Huffard added an assist to finish with three points, while Gatchell also contributed an assist for a three-point night.
Michael DiOrio, Landon Cartwright and Gabe Ruitenberg also recorded assists for the Tribe. Goalkeeper Diego Garciarena made four saves and added an assist on W&M's final goal.
The two sides finished even with 16 shots apiece, while William & Mary held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.
First Half
Radford generated a pair of early opportunities, but Garciarena made saves in the sixth and 16th minutes to keep the match scoreless. The Highlanders also hit the woodwork in the 11th minute.
William & Mary broke through in the 26th minute. DiOrio and Cartwright combined to set up Huffard, who found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal and gave the Tribe a 1-0 advantage.
Garrison nearly doubled the lead after entering as a substitute, putting a shot on goal in the 39th minute that was stopped by Radford goalkeeper Ben Miller.
The Highlanders found the equalizer just before halftime. Hugo Roman scored off an assist from Bryce Paige with 18 seconds remaining in the opening period to send the match into the break tied at 1.
Second Half
The Tribe wasted little time regaining the lead after the break.
Huffard set up Garrison in the 52nd minute, and the sophomore found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to put W&M ahead, 2-1.
Garrison struck again less than 14 minutes later. Gatchell provided the assist as Garrison completed his brace in the 66th minute, extending the Tribe's advantage to 3-1.
William & Mary put the match away in the 79th minute. Garciarena and Ruitenberg combined to set up Gatchell, who scored his first collegiate goal to give the Tribe a 4-1 lead.
Garciarena made one final save in the 83rd minute, and the Tribe saw out the remainder of the match to secure its first victory of the season.
