WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its non-conference slate with a 16-9 setback against ECU at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday evening.
W&M (7-6) owned an 8-7 advantage at halftime, but ECU (5-7) outscored the Tribe 9-1 during the final two quarters to secure the victory.
The Pirates opened the contest by scoring three of the first four goals to build an early lead, but W&M responded with a 5-0 run to go ahead, 6-3, early in the second quarter.
Although ECU rattled off four consecutive goals of its own to reclaim the lead, 7-6, the Tribe responded with a 3-0 spurt that spanned the second and third quarters. However, ECU held W&M scoreless during the final 28:34.
Grace Walter led the Tribe with four points (3g, 1a), while
Kate Draddy also posted a hat trick (3g) to go with four draw controls and three ground balls.
Taylor McCall also came up big with a goal, three draw controls and three ground balls.
W&M outshot the Pirates, 38-34, but ECU owned a 28-20 margin in attempts on goal.
The Tribe also held an advantage in ground balls (20-12), but the Pirates totaled five more draw controls (16-11) and committed three fewer turnovers (7-10).
Maya Koebke (3g, 6a), Rachel Chessock (5g, 1a) and Jamie Collender (3g, 2a) led ECU offensively, while Grace McCarthy totaled a game-high seven draw controls.
The loss snapped a streak of six consecutive games in which W&M had held its opponent to no more than 10 goals – the program's longest stretch since 1998.
W&M will return to its CAA slate when it hosts No. 13 Stony Brook at Martin Family Stadium on Sunday at noon.
