WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team opened its conference slate with an impressive 13-7 victory against Drexel at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Mila Millhouse helped propel W&M to the lopsided win, as she totaled career highs in goals (7) and points (8) – figures that both rank among the program's single-game top-10 lists. Her seven goals ranks tied for sixth in the Tribe's record book, while her point total ranks tied for ninth.
W&M (5-3, 1-0) jumped out to a 5-1 advantage midway through the second quarter and extended the margin to 9-3 early in the second half. Millhouse provided all of the Tribe's early scoring as she tallied the squad's first five goals.
The Dragons (3-5, 0-1) briefly narrowed the margin to four at 9-5 with back-to-back goals late in the third quarter, but the Tribe responded with three unanswered scores to extend its lead and secure the triumph.
W&M's victory snapped Drexel's eight-game winning streak in the series and marked the fourth time this season that the Tribe has limited an opponent to fewer than 10 goals.
In addition to Millhouse,
Finley Hoffman (2g, 1a),
Aubrey Roth (2g, 1a) and
Grace Walter (1g, 2a) also came up big offensively with three points apiece. Roth added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Hoffman tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover. Walter also added three ground balls.
Kate Draddy and
Taylor McCall led W&M on the draw circle with six draws controls apiece.
Goalie
Anna Lopez posted seven saves and a .500 save percentage, while
Sophie Busam tallied two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
W&M outshot Drexel, 32-21, which included a 23-14 advantage in attempts on goal.
The Tribe also owned advantages in draw controls (14-9), winning eight of 11 in the second half, and ground balls (21-16).
W&M also committed three fewer turnovers (14-17).
Teagan Quinn led Drexel with four goals, while Katherine Senich posted three points (1g, 2a).
Mary Claire Heubeck totaled a team-high six draw controls, while Katie Maloney registered two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
W&M will continue its CAA slate when it hosts Towson at Martin Family Stadium next Saturday at noon. The contest will be W&M's Let Her Play game.
