WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team defeated Coastal Carolina, 9-7, at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
W&M (3-2) utilized a 5-1 run to build a 6-2 advantage early in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead.
CCU (4-2) narrowed the margin to one twice, but the Tribe limited the Chants to just one goal during the final 26:19 en route to securing its second straight non-conference victory.
Goalie
Anna Lopez was outstanding in her first career start and posted a .500 save percentage with seven stops, including a key save with just 1:35 remaining to help preserve the victory.
Sophie Busam (3 CT, 4 GB),
Anna Armstrong (3 CT, 2 GB) and
Jaylin Locke (2 CT, 2 GB) also contributed to the outstanding defensive effort.
Finley Hoffman led W&M offensively with a career-high four goals, as she found the back of the cage with all four of her shot attempts. Her final two scores during the second half extended the Tribe's lead three goals and helped propel W&M to the victory.
Grace Walter (2g, 1a) and
Mila Millhouse (2g, 1a) added three points apiece, while
Kate Draddy totaled a team-high five draw controls with an assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
W&M outshot CCU, 24-22, which included a 17-14 advantage in attempts on goal.
The Tribe also owned a 10-8 edge in draw controls, while both teams finished with 21 ground balls and committed 17 turnovers.
Alexandra Horn led the Chants with four points (2g, 2a), while Carleigh Patterson (2g, 1a) and Sophie Kingsborough (2g) also scored twice. Evelyn Kitchin added a team-high seven draw controls.
W&M will look to extend its winning streak when it returns to action at VCU on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
