WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to Richmond, 16-11, at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday evening.
W&M (1-2) trailed by just three, 11-8, early in the fourth quarter, but UR (2-1) rattled off a 5-1 run to build a seven-goal advantage with 6:12 remaining.
The Tribe scored the contest's final two goals but was unable to get closer than the final margin, as the Spiders secured the non-conference victory.
Things looked good for W&M early as it jumped out to a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter following a pair of goals by
Kate Draddy. However, UR answered with a 5-0 run and never relinquished its lead as the Tribe was unable to narrow the margin to less than two during the remainder of the game.
Draddy led the Tribe with four points (2g, 2a), six draw controls, a career-high five caused turnovers and five ground balls, while
Grace Walter (2g),
Mila Millhouse (2g),
Taylor McCall (2g) and
Nora Begley (1g, 1a) added two points apiece.
UR outshot W&M, 32-28, including a 24-20 margin on goal, but the Tribe owned a 17-7 advantage in ground balls and committed five fewer turnovers (5-10).
The Spiders secured 19 of the 29 draws.
Alexis Morton led Richmond with a game-high eight points (5g, 3a), while Meghan Rode added six points (1g, 5a) and 14 draw controls.
W&M will return to action when it plays at George Mason on Saturday at 1 p.m.
