BLACKSBURG, Va. — William & Mary fell to Virginia Tech 9-2 in its season opener on Friday at English Field. Designated hitter
Liam O'Neil provided the lone offense for the Tribe (0-1) with a two-run homer in the second inning.
After a leadoff single by right fielder
Charlie Iriotakis to start the second, O'Neil homered on a 1-2 count for the first runs of the game. Tech responded in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly, trimming the lead to 2-1 after the second inning.
Virginia Tech (1-0) took the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on a groundout and an RBI double. The Hokies scored in each of the final five innings to take command of the game.
Left fielder
Louie Bartletti had a 2-for-4 day, hitting a pair of singles. Iriotakis was 1-for-3 with a run.
On the mound,
Luke Calveric got the start and went two innings, allowing one run and working around several walks.
Daniel Lingle came in to relieve in the third and tossed a scoreless frame.
Preston Crowl was the winning pitcher for Virginia Tech.
Charlie Seneker was credited with the loss.
