Men's Basketball Rolls to Convincing 94-67 Win at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. — William & Mary basketball led throughout on the way to a commanding 94-67 victory at Northeastern on Thursday night at Cabot Gymnasium. The Tribe shot 54.7%, knocked down 12 3-pointers and dished out 27 assists in putting on a offensive display. 

Graduate student Cade Haskins led W&M with 17 points, nailing five 3-pointers and adding three assists. Sophomore Ryan Jackson, Jr. continued his strong play, scoring 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting off the bench. Junior Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi turned in an impressive stat line of 12 points, a career-high six assists, and six rebounds. 

W&M (16-9, 7-6 CAA) built a double-digit lead in the first half through sharp shooting, hitting  8-of-15 from 3-point range. 

The Tribe hit its first four shots from the floor and led 10-2 less than four minutes into the contest as senior Kyle Pulliam scored six of the first 10. W&M hit five-straight 3-pointers to stretch lead to double figures. Haskins hit the first three, before a Vahlberg Fasasi triple gave W&M a 27-16 lead at 9:24 mark. 

W&M's lead reached as much as 12, 40-28, on a Kyle Frazier 4-point play with 2:54 left, and the visitor led by 45-34 at the break. 

Northeastern (6-18, 2-11 CAA) started the final 20 minutes strong, closing within 49-47 just 5:23 into the frame. Following a Mike Longhnana steal and fastbreak lay-up, the Tribe lead was just four, 54-50, at the 12:55 mark. 

The Tribe answered with 11-straight points to put the game out of reach. Jackson, Jr. knocked down a 3-pointer and capped the spurt with a 3-point play to extend the margin to 65-50 with 10:24 left. 

A 16-2 Green and Gold run pushed the lead to its largest at 90-60. W&M held NU without a field goal for more than four minutes. Six different Tribe players scored during the run, before Vahlberg Fasasi found senior Chase Lowe for a fastbreak lay-up to forced a Northeastern timeout with 2:47 remaining and extend the margin to 30. The Tribe shot 59.4% in the second half. 

For the Huskies, Xavier Abreu led all scorers with 24 points, making 10-of-21 shots, including three 3-pointers. Ryan Williams added 15 points, with three 3-pointers, along with five assists and two steals. Youri Fritz was a defensive force, securing seven rebounds and two blocks. NU finished the game shooting 41.9% from the field, but was just 8-of-30 from 3-point range. 

W&M shot 54.5% from 3-point range (12-of-22) and outrebounded NU, 39-31. The Tribe scored 44 points in the paint and 42 points off the bench. Lowe finished with eight points, a team-high eight rebounds and four assists, while Pulliam added eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Junior Reese Miller chipped in eight points and four assists.

The Tribe returns home to host Elon on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on MASN with Jay Colley and Brandon Britt '14 on the call.
