Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Tribe Over UNCW, 79-68

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's basketball had five double-figures scorers in a 79-68 win over UNCW at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon in the annual Gold Rush Game.

The Tribe (11-9, 4-5 CAA) opened the game with a strong defensive presence, converting turnovers into points and establishing a lead. Alexa Mikeska's defensive efforts, including steals and rebounds, set up key scoring opportunities. Monet Dance and Jana Sallman each contributed with significant shots, including Sallman's layup with five seconds left. A 5-0 spurt put the Green & Gold ahead at the end of the first quarter, 14-13.

W&M gained momentum early in the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Mikeska at 9:43, assisted by Kyah Smith, to extend their lead. Dance further bolstered the team's position with a 3-pointer at 8:07, also assisted by Smith.

Despite a brief surge by the Seahawks (5-16, 1-9), which included a 3-pointer by Paige Smith at 3:56, the Tribe maintained control with consistent scoring. Sophia LeGoullon contributed crucial points in the paint towards the end, including a tip-in at 0:38. The quarter concluded with Mikeska hitting two free throws with 5 seconds remaining, leading to a 34-30 advantage for W&M at halftime.

The Tribe seized control in the third quarter with a strong offensive display, highlighted by Dance's 3-pointer at 9:46, extending their lead. Natalie Fox contributed significantly with assists and defensive rebounds, while Mikeska added key points in the paint. Despite a brief scoring surge by UNCW, W&M maintained its momentum, outscoring the opposition 24-16 in the quarter to go up by 12.

In the fourth quarter, the Tribe played well inside, scoring 12 points in the paint. Cassidy Geddes added a critical fast-break layup at 8:19 off an assist by Smith and later hit a three to give W&M its largest lead at 70-52.

The Seahawks attempted to close the gap with a series of three-point shots, but the Tribe's defense held firm. Despite a late push from UNCW, the Green and Gold secured the victory as a late layup from Geddes provided for the final 79-68 margin.
