Dukes score game-winner with 31 seconds remaining

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William & Mary field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker James Madison, 3-2, on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

The Tribe and Dukes battled through a downpour in a back-and-forth affair at Busch Field in Williamsburg. After the Tribe (2-8, 1-1 CAA) equalized early in the fourth quarter before the Dukes (4-6, 3-1 MAC) netted the game-winner with 31 seconds remaining.

In the third quarter, the Dukes added a pair of goals courtesy of a brace from Azul Covarrubias to gain control. De Jesus kept the deficit at just a single goal making multiple highlight reel saves in the third stanza.

In the fourth quarter, Gruendel fed Haynes off the penalty corner to level the scoreline at the 49:48 mark. As the two sides continued to battle down the stretch, JMU engineered the decisive moment in the waning seconds of the contest.
