TOWSON, Md. — William & Mary volleyball posted its first CAA victory of the season as it defeated Towson 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon at the SECU Arena.
W&M (5-8, 1-3 CAA) finished with a season-high 61 kills on a .326 hitting percentage. The victory marks William & Mary's first win over Towson since 2013, snapping a 21-game losing streak.
The Tribe's biggest push in the first set came after Towson (9-6, 3-3) moved ahead 13-9, as
Devereaux Hoxsie's kill gave W&M a sideout and
Cate Hatfield served four straight points, capped by
Teagan Pocius' kill for a 14-13 lead.
The Tigers answered immediately and later stretched the margin, while the Green and Gold got as close as 18-17 before dropping the set 25-21.
W&M answered an early 5-3 deficit in the second set with a stretch that included a block assist by Pocius and
Katherine Arnason block along with an Arnason kill, moving in front 8-6.
After the Tigers closed to 15-14, the Tribe got kills from Arnason, Hoxsie and Pocius to build an 18-14 advantage.
Sophia Van Name added a late kill before
Olivia Westfort finished the set with a kill for a 25-19 set win.
In the third set, the Tribe moved from a 17-17 tie to a 22-17 lead behind a Pocius kill and four straight points on
Regan Hill's serve, including an ace by the freshman. The Tigers got back to 24-21, but Arnason finished the set with a kill from
Shylah Swope for a 25-21 W&M win.
The Green and Gold took control of the fourth set by turning an 11-9 deficit into a 17-12 lead, with Pocius, Van Name, Hoxsie and
Audrey Brcka all involved in points during the surge.
The Tribe kept the margin from there, getting late kills from Brcka and Arnason before Westfort finished the set with a kill for a 25-17 victory.
