WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- The William & Mary Field Hockey team (2-7, 1-1 CAA) rallied from an early deficit to top Towson (4-7, 1-2 CAA) in its conference home opener on Friday evening.
Josie Mae Gruendel and
Callia Uviedo recorded second half goals in the comeback effort at Busch Field. Gruendel's marked was her team-leading third of the season and the ninth of her decorated career. Uviedo's decisive tally was the first of the freshmen's career and logged a season-high three shots.
Alexandra De Jesus picked up the victory in goal, making three saves at home. The senior made a crucial stops in the final minutes of the contest to seal the victory.
Just 3:27 into the contest, Towson got on the board before the call was reversed after a successful video referral by the Tribe. The opposite took place took as W&M had
Hailey Haynes tally wiped off at the 11:32 mark of the opening quarter.
The visitors took the lead at the 13:47 mark as the Tigers took the lead, 1-0, behind a goal from Larrina Delfina assisted by Elise Wismans.
At the end of the opening half, Towson went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Early in the latter stanza, Mae Gruendel flew down the right side weaving into the shooting circle. The senior fired a strike into the top right corner of the cage to level the scoreline 28 seconds into the second half, 1-1.
At the 43:17 mark, Uviedo delivered the clutch highlight-reel goal from the outside of the circle. The rookies back-handed shot soared into the upper right corner to give the Tribe a one goal lead with 1:43 left in the third quarter.
In the final minutes, de Jesus made an impressive kick save denying the Towson one-on-one opportunity to move the Tribe to 1-1 in conference play.
