GREENSBORO, N.C. — William & Mary used a dominant first half to defeat North Carolina A&T 60-49 on Friday night at the Corbett Sports Center in the CAA opener, securing its seventh straight win and fifth consecutive road victory.
The Tribe (8-4, 1-0 CAA) started strong with a pair of layups by
Alexa Mikeska in the opening minutes, establishing an early lead.
Dynasti Pierce contributed significantly with a 3-pointer and a jumper, pushing the advantage to 9-3.
Monet Dance facilitated the offense with multiple assists, including setting up Pierce's shots, and later added a 3-pointer of her own at 4:13.
Cassidy Geddes closed the quarter with a 3-pointer at 00:46, extending the lead. The quarter ended with the Tribe ahead 17-9.
The Green and Gold asserted control in the second quarter with a strong offensive performance. They executed a 9-0 run to open the quarter, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Pierce at 8:42. Later, W&M expanded their lead further with a series of successful plays, including a fast-break layup by Geddes at 2:21. Dance facilitated the offense with multiple assists throughout the quarter. N.C. A&T (5-7, 0-1) struggled to respond effectively, managing only seven points in the frame. The Tribe led 37-16 at the half.
W&M maintained their lead with a strong start to the third quarter, highlighted by Pierce's fast-break layup following a steal by Geddes at 9:40, pushing the score to 39-16. They extended their advantage with a paint presence, as Mikeska scored another layup at 8:25, assisted by
Natalie Fox, bringing the score to 41-16.
Although the Aggies staged a small rally, including a 3-pointer by Elliott Jessup at 6:37, W&M sustained its lead with a balanced effort on both ends.
Sophia LeGoullon added a layup at 2:07 off another Geddes assist, making it 46-24. The quarter concluded with a jumper by
Kyah Smith at the buzzer, ending the third quarter with the Tribe ahead 48-29.
William & Mary opened the fourth quarter with defensive intensity, as Dance and Geddes each recorded early steals. Geddes then hit back-to-back 3-pointers, with assists from Fox and Dance, extending their lead to 54-32 at 8:27. Despite the Aggies' efforts to close the gap, the Green and Gold maintained control with contributions from multiple players, including a jumper by Fox and a layup by
Marley Long.
In the latter half of the quarter, N.C. A&T attempted to rally with a series of layups, but William & Mary's consistent defensive plays, including blocks and rebounds, kept the home team at bay.
Amelia Basit added a jumper at 3:32, helping to preserve the lead. The Tribe held on for an 11-point win.
