WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A late surge in overtime broke open a close game as William & Mary fell to Stony Brook 73-57 at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon, snapping the team's seven-game winning streak.
The Tribe (8-5, 1-1 CAA) set the tone early as
Cassidy Geddes connected on a 3-pointer just 29 seconds into the contest.
Dynasti Pierce added to the lead with a tip-in at 8:48, helping the home team to a 5-0 advantage. Despite a strong defensive effort, including a block by
Alexa Mikeska at 2:31, W&M faced a resilient response from the Seawolves (6-9, 1-1).
Jana Sallman's layup at 5:23, assisted by
Monet Dance, maintained the pressure, but a series of turnovers allowed Stony Brook to close the gap.
Kyah Smith's late 3-pointer with 48 seconds remaining briefly put the Green and Gold ahead. However, Stony Brook regained the lead with a pair of free throws by Sandra Frau-Garcia as the quarter concluded with the visitors leading 15-14.
The Tribe gained momentum early in the second quarter with Geddes hitting a 3-pointer assisted by Dance at 9:47, establishing a lead. W&M extended their advantage with key contributions from
Natalie Fox, who scored a layup and added a free throw, pushing the score to 25-17 at 6:09. Despite the Seawolves' attempt to close the gap with a late surge, including two 3-pointers from Nal'la Bennett, the Green and Gold maintained their edge. The quarter concluded with William & Mary leading 33-28.
The Tribe seized momentum in the third quarter with Geddes hitting a 3-pointer just 58 seconds in, assisted by Fox, to extend their lead. Fox continued to impact the game by scoring two more field goals, including a crucial jumper in the paint with 5:29 remaining, maintaining their slight edge. Despite Stony Brook's efforts, including a fast-break layup by Janay Brantley at 4:36, Geddes capped the quarter with a layup in the final seconds, assisted by Sallman, securing a 43-39 lead. The quarter ended with W&M outscoring the Seawolves 13-11.
In the final quarter, the Tribe made a strong push with a fastbreak jumper by Pierce at 9:02 that widened their lead to six points. Dance then contributed a key layup at 6:21, maintaining their edge despite Stony Brook's resilience. The tension escalated as Dance's jumper at 1:07, followed by a successful free throw, tied the score at 52, setting an intense finish. In the final seconds, Geddes hit a crucial fastbreak jumper to equalize at 54 with 10 seconds remaining. The quarter ended with the Seawolves unable to convert a last-second attempt, resulting in a 54-54 draw at the end of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
William & Mary struggled to gain momentum in the overtime period, with Mikeska providing the team's only field goal with a layup at 2:38. Despite taking a timeout at 2:55 to regroup, they failed to close the gap, as turnovers and missed shots prevailed. The Seawolves capitalized on their opportunities, maintaining a perfect field goal percentage in the period and extending their lead to 16 to come away with the win.
