Bestic Breaks School Record at Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Charlie Bestic broke a school record in the men's 500m to highlight the William & Mary track and field team at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge over the weekend.

Bestic broke the record with a time of 1:03.36, surpassing the previous mark set by George Ashton in 1998. The sophomore finished first in the race.

The Tribe also saw a pair of freshman records go down in field events. Amelia Bawcombe placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 18.44m (60'6"), standing second all-time and best ever for a Tribe rookie. Her teammate Talia Anderson threw the weight a distance of 18.29m (60' ¼"), good for third all-time.

In the men's shot put, Uriah Harris delivered a freshman record throw of 17.62m (57'9 ¾"), ranking third all-time. Harris was also runner-up in the weight throw, clearing a distance of 16.56m (54'4").

Jacob Robinson delivered a strong performance in the 60m. After setting a personal record with a time of 6.90 in the prelims, Robinson upped his time in the finals clocking in at 6.87. That time remains second-fastest in school history.

The Green & Gold scored a victory in the 1000m as Nolan Yeagle crossed the finish line in 2:29.04. Caleb Wilcox did not finish far behind, clocking in at 2:30.06 to place third.

Competing in the long jump, Summer Mellow finished runner up on the women's side with a distance of 5.49m (18' ¼"). Andrew Ernst also placed second for the men, leaping 7.13m (23'4.75").
