Men's Soccer and UMBC Play to 1-1 Stalemate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary and UMBC battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The Tribe took an early lead with a goal from Sam Delgado in the first half, but UMBC equalized in the second half.

Despite W&M's three shots on goal, UMBC's goalkeeper made two crucial saves in the second half to maintain the deadlock.

The first half concluded with a decisive play as the Green and Gold broke the deadlock in the 44th minute. Delgado found the net with an assist from Diogo Branco and Evan Rabush, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Both Rabush and Branco played perfectly judged passes to set up Delgado's goal from the left side of the box.

Goalkeeper Ryan Eapen played a key role in maintaining the advantage, making crucial saves at the 3rd and 19th minutes to keep UMBC scoreless. The first half featured plenty of battles for possession in the midfield with both defenses limiting clean shot attempts.

The second half opened with the Tribe applying pressure early, as Delgado struck the top woodwork in the 57th minute, followed by a quick attempt a minute later. However, UMBC capitalized on their chances and leveled the match with a goal in the 61st minute. The equalizer was scored off a free kick from 20 yards out.

W&M continued to press forward, with Gabe Ruitenberg's effort saved by UMBC's goalkeeper in the 76th minute, but ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Eapen recorded four saves over 90 minutes. Delgado scored the team's only goal, finishing with three shots.

The next challenge for W&M men's soccer takes them to Wilmington, N.C., where they will face off against UNCW on September 13. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. as they look to secure a road victory.
