CHARLESTON, S.C. — William & Mary men's soccer rallied from a goal deficit to pull even in the opening half on Saturday afternoon in Charleston. Unfortunately, College of Charleston's Ben Bagshaw scored twice over the game's final 50 minutes to give the home team a 3-1 CAA win.
After Charleston scored first on a Pavel Dashin goal in the sixth minute, the Tribe (0-6-3, 0-3-1 CAA) battled back to pull even on a beautiful goal from senior midfielder
Diogo Branco. On the play, junior
Evan Rabush served the ball in from the left flank. Charleston goalkeeper Jourdan Schumacher tried to clear it with a punch. Branco jumped on the end of it and volleyed home the equalizer in the 29th minute.
Just over five minutes before the end of the opening 45, Bagshaw put CofC (4-6-1, 1-2-1 CAA) back in front for good. He curled a shot inside the far post from just inside the box to give the home team a 2-1 advantage at the intermission.
Bagshaw extended the Cougar lead to the final margin of 3-1 with his second goal of the afternoon just over five minutes into the second half.
The goal was Branco's first of the season and third of his W&M career. The assist was Rabush's team-leading second on the year.
Both teams finished with 17 shots. Charleston put seven on frame compared to three for W&M. Junior goalkeeper
Ryan Eapen made four saves on the afternoon, while junior
Gabe Ruitenberg led the team with five shots.
The Tribe will defend home turf at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field as they take on American on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The match is set to kick off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloCollege.
