WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer defeated American 1-0 on Tuesday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The game's lone goal came in the second half, securing a shutout for the home team.
The Tribe's defense held strong all evening, allowing only three shots on goal.
The first half commenced with the Tribe's defense holding firm, highlighted by an early save by goalkeeper
Ryan Eapen.
Despite pressure from the Eagles, including multiple corner kicks, Eapen made crucial saves, notably in the 19th minute.
W&M responded offensively around the 25th minute with a series of shots within 10 seconds of each other from
Sam Delgado,
Webb Kosich, and
Diogo Branco, all kept out by the Eagles keeper
The Tribe maintained defensive resilience throughout, with Eapen adding another save in the 33rd minute. Despite several fouls, W&M's defense and midfield contained the Eagles' advances, concluding the half with the score level at 0-0.
After having to defend for most of the first half, the Tribe flipped the script in the second half by owning most of the attacking chances, as Delgado and Kosich each tested the Eagles' goalkeeper early on.
The home side's persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when
Devin Cooper netted a goal, assisted by
Michael DiOrio and Branco, putting the Green and Gold ahead 1-0. The goal was a product of great build-up, with Branco lofting a perfect pass to DiOrio, who found Cooper at the near post to finish it off with a header. Significantly, the goal for Cooper was the first points of his college career.
Down the stretch the Tribe maintained their defensive composure, limiting the Eagles' chances and preventing any equalizing opportunities. The period concluded with W&M securing a 1-0 victory, holding their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Cooper scored the decisive goal, securing a 1-0 victory with his game-winning finish. Eapen recorded a shutout, making three saves to keep the opposition scoreless. Branco contributed with an assist, adding to his two shots, one of which was on target. DiOrio also provided an assist, helping to set up the pivotal play.
In their next game, the Tribe will take to their home field to face off against UNCW on October 4. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
