WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer dropped a local rivalry game to Old Dominion, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium.
ODU scored twice in the second half, overcoming an early goal by the Tribe. The visitors owned the shot count, 21-7, with W&M's two goalkeepers,
Ryan Eapen and
Karan Sobti combining for nine saves.
The opening period saw the Green and Gold respond decisively after ODU took an early lead in the 12th minute.
William & Mary quickly gained momentum, equalizing at the 18th minute with a goal from
Gabe Ruitenberg, assisted by
Michael DiOrio and
Damen Burney. Throughout the remainder of the period, the Tribe's defense, led by goalkeeper
Ryan Eapen, held firm under pressure, making several key saves. The period concluded with the score tied at 1-1, setting up a competitive second half.
The second period began with ODU increasing their pressure, resulting in a goal in the 49th minute, putting them ahead 2-1.
W&M responded with attempts by
Diogo Branco and
Sam Delgado, both of which were thwarted by the Monarchs' defense.
As the period progressed, ODU extended their lead with an insurance goal in the 80th minute to make it 3-1.
Despite a late push by W&M, including a shot by
Lucas Caldas that was saved, the team was unable to close the gap before the final whistle. The period concluded with ODU maintaining their 3-1 advantage.
The next challenge for the Tribe takes them on the road to Charleston, S.C., where they will face off against Charleston on September 27. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on FloCollege.
