WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary men's soccer and Elon played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Martin Family Stadium, marking the Tribe's first result in CAA play.
Both teams found the net in the second half of the match as the Tribe totaled eight shots with four on goal. Elon registered ten shots, also placing four on target.
The first half was a defensive battle, reflected in W&M's notable opportunity in the 5th minute when
Lucas Caldas's shot aimed at the bottom left corner was saved by Elon's goalkeeper. Despite multiple battles in the midfield and a late attempt from
Alexandros Katsari-Hoefer, the teams remained scoreless at the end of the first half.
The second half began with Elon taking an early lead, scoring in the 49th minute. Both offenses picked things up in the final 45 minutes, with the Green and Gold responding as
Sam Delgado converted a crucial penalty kick in the 68th minute to equalize the score. Goalkeeper
Ryan Eapen made key saves in the half, helping to maintain the 1-1 draw through the final whistle. Both sides had great chances to break the tie in the final moments, but the keepers made great stops to end the match in a draw.
Delgado scored one goal and recorded two shots on goal from a total of three shots. Eapen, playing as goalkeeper, finished the match with three saves, facing ten shots and conceding only one goal.
Diogo Branco contributed offensively with two shots, one of which was on target, as he looked to add pressure in the midfield.
Looking ahead, the Tribe will host Old Dominion on September 23. The match is set for 6 p.m. at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va.
