Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Finale, 1-0, at Delaware

NEWARK, Del.—The William & Mary women's soccer team owned the majority of the chances in its non-conference finale on Friday evening against Delaware, but it was the Blue Hens who were able to find the game's only goal, winning 1-0.

Both teams had chances early in what was an action packed first half, but the defenses were up to the challenge to keep things scoreless.

Lindsay Wilson and Mia Abbey both had shots on goal in the early parts of a match that saw 11 total shots in its first 25 minutes. Both Tribe chances were saved however..

W&M kept pressing on, looking to break the tie, and seemed poised to later in the half when Paige Seitz fired a shot that went through the hands of the keeper but just barely grazed the post to stay out of the net.

When the dust settled on the opening 45 minutes the Tribe had outshot the Blue Hens 13-5 in the 0-0 stalemate.

The Tribe's offensive intensity didn't waver, with Abbey teaming up with Ellie Leffler for a goal scoring chance in the 53rd minute. Leffer served a cross to her fellow freshman with Abbey steering a header towards the goal. The attempt hit off the keeper's hands however and then off the woodwork to keep the game scoreless.

The Tribe mounted four more shots on goal in the second half but were empty handed.

UD hadn't recorded any shots on frame in the first 87 minutes but capitalized when they finally did.

The Hens came down the left wing firing a shot that required a diving save from Gwen Doughty, unfortunately for the Tribe the rebounded went directly to a Blue Hen attacker who finished off the play into the empty net, stealing a 1-0 win for the hosts.

The final shot tally read 23-10 in favor of W&M with Abbey's five shots leading the way.

The Tribe returns to action on Thursday for its CAA opener at Drexel.
