FARMVILLE, Va. - William & Mary field hockey suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at Longwood on Sunday afternoon.
The Lancers (2-6) scored the game's only goal just over three minutes into the third quarter. Hailey Flick received ball along the right endline. With junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus coming off her line, the Lancer midfielder flipped a pass over the top of the Tribe goalkeeper's stick to a waiting Channy Johnson, who hammered it home for the game's only tally.
W&M's best chance came in the closing minutes of the third quarter with junior
Anya Green and freshman
Lily Johnson combining. Dribbling through the midfield, Green found Johnson open in the right side of the circle. The Tribe rookie's shot was blocked by Longwood goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk. Johnon collected her own rebound and fed back to Green in the middle of the circle. Her chance was blocked by the stick of Lancer defender Meghan Hyatt to thwart the Tribe's opportunity.
Longwood finished the game with a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 10-5 margin in penalty corners.
Defensively, de Jesus played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with seven saves on the afternoon.
The teams were scoreless after the opening 30 minutes. Longwood generated a sequence of three-straight corners just two minutes into the second quarter. de Jesus made three saves during the stretch, including back-to-back stops on the final of the three corners, including turning away a rebound chance from Flick.
W&M's best opportunity of the opening half came off the stick of junior
Ellen Ford in the 23rd minute. Mooldijk was able to deny the chance with the leg pad.
The Tribe (1-5) continues on the road at former CAA rival Delaware on Friday, Sept. 26. The match carries a 3 p.m. start time and will be broadcast on the Blue Hen's YouTube channel.
