Women's Soccer Cruises Past American, 3-1, on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer took care of business Sunday, defeating American 3-1 at Martin Family Stadium. Sunday's match was senior day for the Tribe, honoring a senior class of eight prior to the game.

The Tribe took an early lead with a goal in the first half and secured the victory with two more goals in the second half. Despite American's (0-4-1, 0-0 Patriot) efforts, William & Mary (2-3-1, 0-0 CAA)  was seemingly always in the driver's seat, dominating possession throughout the entire game. The Eagles managed a single goal in the second half, but none of their eight shots, aside from their goal, were high-quality looks. The shot total finished 17-8 in favor of the Tribe.

William & Mary opened the first half strong with Sheridan Brummett scoring from the top of the box in the 4th minute, assisted by Lindsay Wilson, giving the team an early 1-0 lead.

The Tribe maintained offensive pressure with several corner kicks and shots, including attempts by Madison Moon and Ellie Leffler, though American's goalkeeper made the necessary saves to limit further scoring. Senior, Ava Lentz, also contributed defensively for William & Mary with a save in the 37th minute, helping the team hold onto their lead at the end of the half.

The second half saw an early surge from W&M with Ivey Crain converting a penalty kick following an Eagles handball in the 51st minute to extend their lead. The impressive offensive effort continued with Wilson firing a left-footed rocket and scoring with an assist from Mia Abbey in the 77th minute.

American tried their best for a late comeback, but had multiple attempts saved by Gwen Doughty in the second half. The Eagles did find the back of the net in the 88th minute but it was too little too late, leading to a 3-1 final.

Wilson had a standout performance with a goal, her third of the year, and an assist. Crain was pivotal, scoring a crucial goal that was the game-winner, and netting one of her two shots on goal. Abbey played a key supporting role, providing an assist. Brummett also added to the scoring with a goal from three shots, one of which was on target. In goal, Doughty made two saves in the second half, facing seven shots.

The next challenge for the Green and Gold is a trip to Blacksburg, Va., where they will face No. 24 Virginia Tech. The game is set for Sunday at 6 p.m. on ACCNX.
